Even if I knew the world were going to end tomorrow, I would go out and plant a tree today. (several people have been credited with this but I think Martin Luther originated the thought)

(Translation: “Even if I should learn that the world would end tomorrow, I would still plant this apple tree today.”)
— Martin Luther

There is a popular legend that, when he was asked what he would do if he knew the world would end tomorrow, Luther replied that he would plant an apple tree.

“If I knew that tomorrow the world would end, I would plant an apple tree today” legendary quote from Martin Luther (1483-1546). Researching the quote on the internet it is very often attributed to Martin Luther King Junior. He may have said it, but the elder did it before him. (first written evidence of this saying comes from 1944).

The first written evidence of this saying comes from 1944: Priest Karl Lotz in an internal letter to the trusted people of the Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck.

Even if I knew the world would end tomorrow, I would continue to plant my apple trees.” That is the statement of faith traditionally attributed to Martin Luther. Some skeptic recently challenged the world of scholarship to demonstrate exactly where Luther had ever made such a declaration, and nobody could find an exact source. Perhaps, like so many such pieties, the idea really came from Goethe. Or perhaps Thoreau. It does not greatly matter, for the statement itself is one of abiding hope and abiding truth.
